Overview

This qualification is suitable for everyone within a workplace as it provides learners with the knowledge to identify suspected mental health conditions as well as the skills to start a conversation and be able to signpost a person towards professional help.

The syllabus covers a range of mental health conditions along with how to recognise and manage stress. Other topics include how to start a supportive conversation and when and how to signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help.

Having completed the award, learners may decide to progress to the Level 2 Award in First Aid in Mental Health. This would allow them to take the role of First Aider for Mental Health within the workplace and be a point of contact within the workplace to help and support those with a suspected mental health condition.

Who would this course suit?

This course is suitable for everyone within the workplace and is designed to help employers promote and encourage a positive mental health culture.  Promoting open conversations and reducing stigma, this qualification acknowledges mental health problems and recognises it as part of employee welfare.

Learners are provided with;

  • Comprehensive knowledge on a range of the most common mental health conditions in order that they can identify suspected mental health conditions
  • The skills to be able to act should a condition be suspected.
  • Start a conversation and be able to signpost a person towards professional help and support that person whilst they are receiving professional assistance.

Syllabus

A range of First Aid for Mental Health related subjects are covered including:

  • What is First Aid for Mental Health?
  • Identifying mental health conditions
  • Providing advice and starting a conversation
  • Stress
  • Mental health conditions

Learning outcomes

  • Know what mental health is, why people develop mental health conditions and the role of a First Aider for Mental Health
  • Know how to provide advice and practical support for a person presenting a suspected mental health condition
  • Know how to recognise and manage stress
  • Know how to recognise a range of mental health conditions

Learners will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals but will gain the knowledge to identify when a person may have a condition and know where they can go to get help.

Duration

A minimum of 4 hours ideally completed in one day.

Assessment

This qualification is assessed through a written assessment paper to be completed at the end of the course.

Other assessment methods are used, including;

  • Practical demonstration
  • Oral questioning (verbal and multiple-choice).

The RQF Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health (SCQF Level 4 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health) will be issued to the learner, subject to successful assessment. No external assessors are required.

Course materials

Each delegate will receive a First Aid for Mental Health course handbook. This is included in the course costs.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the qualification assessment, learners will be awarded the Ofqual regulated Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health (RQF) or equivalent SCQF.

This qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. It is strongly recommended that the learner attends annual refresher training. The learner will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years.

This qualification can be delivered via;

  • Online training
  • Onsite training (prior to pre assessment of training facilities)
  • Offsite training

Attendees 

A maximum of 16 students can be accommodated and all candidates must be a minimum of 14 years of age to qualify.

Course cost 

This is dependent on the delivery and takes into account number of delegates and location.
