Overview

Approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year, the severity of which can range from minor transient symptoms, to more severe health problems that significantly impact on daily life.

Many of the early warning signs are not recognised and not openly discussed, which can result in a far more damaging health problem. Mental health can affect all aspects of our lives and research has shown that the work environment is the biggest cause of stress, with 1 in 6 employees experiencing common mental health problems in the workplace. This affects how people perform at work and has greater implications on productivity and the wider economy.

This qualification provides the knowledge and understanding of how a positive mental health culture within the workplace can be promoted. It covers a range of mental health conditions, including how to manage stress and understanding the impact of substance abuse.  Other topics include, how to start a supportive conversation, when and how to signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help and planning a first aid action plan for mental health.
