Overview

This qualification goes into detail on a wide range of mental health conditions and the support and help provided by healthcare professionals. It covers and builds on the content of both the Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications but is aimed at Trainer/ Assessors and/or supervisor level within the workplace.

Learners will learn about the first aid action plan for mental health, be able to put it in place and understand how to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace.

Who would this course suit?

It is suitable for everyone within the workplace and specifically aimed for those who hold a supervisory/managerial level position and who have responsibility for implementing a positive mental health culture and responsibility for First Aid for Mental Health within an organisation.

This course is designed in order for employers to provide a positive mental health culture. Promoting open conversations and reducing stigma, this qualification acknowledges mental health problems and recognises it as part of employee welfare.

Learners are provided with;

  •   Comprehensive knowledge on a range of the most common mental health conditions in order that they can identify suspected Mental Health conditions
  • The skills to be able to act should a condition be suspected.
  • Start a conversation and be able to signpost a person towards professional help and support that person whilst they are receiving professional assistance.
  • Provide their peers with a First Aid for Mental Health Action Plan.
  • Support other First Aiders for Mental Health working within the organisation.

Learning outcomes

  •  Know what mental health is, why people develop mental health conditions and the role of a First Aider for mental health
  • Know how to provide advice and practical support for a person presenting a suspected mental health condition
  • Know how to recognise and manage stress
  • Understand the impact of substance abuse on mental health
  • Understand the first aid action plan for mental health and be able to put it in place
  • Know how to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace
  • Understand a range of mental health disorders and the support/therapy provided by professional healthcare providers

Learners undertaking this course will take the role of Supervisor of First Aid for Mental Health within the workplace and be a point of contact within the workplace for other First Aiders in Mental Health and to help and support those with a suspected mental health condition.

Learners will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals but will gain the knowledge to identify when a person may have a condition and know where they can go to get help.

Duration

A minimum of 12 hours spread over at least two days. Ideally, the course should be delivered over two consecutive days.

Assessment

This qualification is assessed through a written assessment paper and the practical demonstration of the first aid action plan for mental health, to be completed at the end of the course.

Other assessment methods are used, including;

  • Practical demonstration of the First Aid for Mental Health Action Plan
  • Oral questioning (verbal and multiple-choice).

The RQF Level 3 Award in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health/ SCQF Level 6 Award in Leading First Aid in Mental Health will be issued to the learner, subject to successful assessment. No external assessors are required.

Course materials

Each delegate will receive a Supervising First Aid for Mental Health course handbook. This is included in the course costs and can be either downloaded in digital format or supplied as a hard copy.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the qualification assessment, learners will be awarded the Ofqual regulated Level 3 Award in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health (RQF) or equivalent SCQF.

This qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. It is strongly recommended that the learner attends annual refresher training. The learner will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years.

This qualification can be delivered via;

  • Online training
  • Onsite training (prior to pre assessment of training facilities)
  • Offsite training

Attendees 

A maximum of 16 students can be accommodated and all candidates must be a minimum of 16 years of age to qualify.

Course cost 

This is dependent on the delivery and takes into account number of delegates and location.
